Fresh forms
Check salads and cooked vegetable bases. A finely chopped ingredient can be difficult to recognise in a finished dish.

Celery allergy concerns the plant in more than its familiar stalk form. Leaves, seeds and celeriac can also matter. Your diagnosis and specialist advice determine which forms you need to avoid, including whether pollen-related reactions are involved.
Celery allergy is not limited to raw stalks. Celery leaves, seeds and dried seasonings also need checking. Celeriac is a related form grown for its root, not an unrelated vegetable substitute.
Anaphylaxis UK: celery allergy ↗01 / RECOGNISE THE INGREDIENT
Celery can be finely chopped into a cooking base or used in stock, soup and seasoning. Removing visible pieces does not remove celery already cooked into the liquid. Check the stock cube or powder as well as fresh vegetables.

Celery seed · celery salt · dried celery
Read the seasoning blend. Drying or grinding can make the source less visible without making it a different ingredient.
Stocks · soups · sauces
Ask about the original stock or powder. Celery may be part of a base prepared long before your order.

Read the full ingredients list each time, including the ingredients inside a mix or sauce. Keep the packet available if staff need to check it. A product name or front-of-pack claim cannot answer every ingredient question.
Anaphylaxis UK: celery allergy ↗Use the labelling guidance for the country where the food is sold. The foods covered, wording and presentation of allergen information can differ. Do not assume a familiar brand has the same recipe everywhere.
For unpackaged food, ask for ingredient information from the person preparing it. If a name or translation is unclear, keep the original wording available rather than guessing from a partial translation.

03 / FOLLOW THE PREPARATION
Some celery reactions are associated with pollen allergy, but cooking is not a universal solution. The forms you avoid should follow your individual allergy advice.
Ask staff to check the recipe and any bought-in ingredients with the kitchen. Include the sauce, garnish and finishing step in the conversation, and explain which ingredients you need to avoid.
Get a clear answer about both ingredients and preparation before ordering. If the kitchen cannot confirm them, choose another option. A translated card can support this conversation when you do not share a language.

Anaphylaxis UK: celery allergy ↗A celery diagnosis alone does not provide an avoidance list for every related plant. Tell your specialist about any other reactions and seek individual advice before broadening restrictions. Keep restaurant questions specific to your confirmed needs.
