A FOOD TRADITION
Ålandic Cuisine
Ålandic cuisine is an island and Swedish-speaking tradition in Finland's Baltic archipelago, influenced by maritime exchange, farming, and the distinctive resources of small coastal communities. Potatoes, rye and wheat, apples, dairy, fish, and preserved foods are central, with baking, smoking, salting, pickling, and oven cooking especially important. Åland pancake, commonly served with stewed fruit and cream, is the best-known sweet preparation. Other representative foods include black bread, a dark malted loaf, and smoked or salted Baltic herring and other local fish. The tradition is Finnish in political context but culturally connected to the Swedish-speaking cuisines of the Baltic region.
