A FOOD TRADITION

Cham Muslim Cuisine

Cham Muslim Cuisine in Cambodia is maintained by Cham communities along the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and in parts of southeastern Cambodia, while sharing influences with neighboring mainland Southeast Asian Muslim foodways. Rice, fish, beef, chicken, coconut, turmeric, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, and toasted spices are prominent. Cooking commonly involves pounding aromatic pastes, slow simmering curries, grilling, and preparing spiced rice dishes for family or religious occasions. Representative examples include Cambodian Muslim chicken curry, Cham-style beef curry, and biryani-style spiced rice with meat. The tradition is internally diverse and overlaps with Khmer, Malay, and Vietnamese influences; it should not be treated as a single uniform cuisine or an exclusive Cham invention.
