A FOOD TRADITION

Karen Cuisine

Karen cuisine, also called Kayin food in Myanmar contexts, is associated with Karen communities across southeastern Myanmar and adjoining borderlands. It is a shared cross-border tradition rather than an exclusive national property. Rice, including glutinous rice, fish, pork, bamboo shoots, sesame, chilies, leafy greens, herbs, and fermented seafood are widely used. Cooking commonly includes grilling, steaming in leaves or bamboo, boiling, pounding condiments, and preparing vegetable-rich soups and relishes. Representative foods include kaw poo, a Karen rice preparation; htamin jin-style rice and fish mixtures found in Karen foodways; and bamboo-shoot soups or grilled fish served with herb and chili dips.
