A FOOD TRADITION
Kenyan Luhya Cuisine
Kenyan Luhya cuisine is practiced across western Kenya and encompasses diverse but related food traditions among Luhya-speaking communities. Maize, sorghum, millet, beans, cassava, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, and poultry are central, with groundnuts and sesame contributing flavor and texture. Staple porridges are cooked thick and served with vegetable, bean, or meat relishes; chicken is commonly simmered or prepared for ceremonies, while greens may be boiled and seasoned with onions, tomatoes, or groundnut-based sauces. Familiar examples include obusuma, ingokho, and murere or other amaranth-leaf dishes. The cuisine is strongly connected to farming, household hospitality, and communal celebrations.
