A FOOD TRADITION

Kihnu Cuisine

Kihnu cuisine belongs to the island community of Kihnu and its maritime cultural sphere in the Gulf of Riga. Fishing, seafaring, household farming, and seasonal preservation have shaped a practical food tradition centered on rye bread, potatoes, pork, dairy, Baltic fish, and gathered berries or mushrooms. Salting, smoking, drying, baking, and slow boiling are important techniques, allowing island households to use catches and provisions over extended periods. Representative foods include salted or smoked herring and other local fish, potato-and-pork stews, and festive blood sausages served with preserved cabbage or potatoes. Kihnu cooking shares ingredients and methods with other Baltic islands, yet remains part of the island’s broader living cultural heritage.
