A FOOD TRADITION
Montenegrin Albanian Cuisine
Montenegrin Albanian cuisine is practiced most visibly in and around Ulcinj, the Malesia region, and other Albanian-speaking communities, linking coastal, lake, and mountain foodways. It combines corn and wheat breads, layered doughs, peppers, beans, greens, lamb, dairy, and Adriatic seafood, with grilling, baking, stuffing, and slow simmering as common techniques. Flija, a many-layered baked batter dish, is a notable festive preparation; japrak refers to vine leaves or other leaves filled with seasoned rice and meat; and dishes of grilled or baked fish reflect the coastal setting. The tradition is shared with Albania and Kosovo, with substantial local variation rather than a single standardized canon.
