A FOOD TRADITION
Montenegrin Bosniak Cuisine
Montenegrin Bosniak cuisine is associated especially with Muslim communities in the Sandžak, Plav-Gusinje, and other northern and northeastern areas, while forming part of a wider Sandžak and Balkan tradition. It combines wheat-based doughs, stuffed vegetables, dairy, lamb, beef, beans, and aromatic peppers with techniques shaped by Ottoman-era cooking. Handmade pastries and filled vegetables are especially characteristic, alongside slow-cooked stews and soups. Representative dishes include mantije, small baked meat-filled pastries; sogan-dolma, onions stuffed with seasoned meat; and klepe, filled dumplings served with a sauce. These foods are shared across national borders, and local household versions vary considerably.
