A FOOD TRADITION
Rakhine Cuisine
Rakhine cuisine comes from Myanmar’s western coastal region and reflects Arakanese foodways shaped by the Bay of Bengal, river deltas, and long contact with South Asian and Southeast Asian neighbors. Fish, dried seafood, shrimp paste, chilies, garlic, onions, turmeric, and souring agents are central, with rice as the staple. Cooking often emphasizes sharply seasoned broths, relishes, salads, and seafood preparations, while comparatively restrained use of oil distinguishes many home-style dishes. Recognizable examples include Rakhine mont di, a rice-noodle and fish preparation; nga-pi yay, a pungent fish-paste dip or broth; and fish-based sour curries and salads served with rice.
