A FOOD TRADITION

Rapa Nui Cuisine

Rapa Nui cuisine developed on Easter Island through Polynesian traditions, adaptation to a remote island environment, and later contact with Chile and the wider Pacific. Its foundations include fish and shellfish, sweet potatoes, taro, bananas, plantains, yams, coconut where available, and other cultivated or gathered foods. Traditional cooking commonly uses earth ovens, grilling, steaming, and wrapping food in leaves. Representative examples include umu preparations cooked in an earth oven, tunu ahi grilled fish, and po'e, a dense baked or steamed pudding made with starchy crops and fruit. Contemporary Rapa Nui foodways combine ancestral methods with introduced ingredients without losing their island identity.
