A FOOD TRADITION

Styrian Cuisine

Styrian cuisine comes from southeastern Austria and reflects Alpine, Central European, and neighboring Slovenian influences. It is associated with pumpkin seed oil, beans, maize, apples, mushrooms, pork, poultry, and freshwater fish, alongside substantial soups and dumpling traditions. Common techniques include slow cooking, roasting, preserving, and dressing warm dishes with seed oil. Representative dishes include Steirisches Wurzelfleisch, Käferbohnensalat, and Backhendl. The tradition varies between the forested and mountainous north and the more Pannonian south, and its ingredients and preparations frequently overlap with Slovenian and other regional cuisines across the border.
