Start with the declaration questions
Smartraveller’s insurance guidance identifies allergies among conditions that may need disclosure and may not be automatically covered. Read the insurer’s definition of a pre-existing condition and complete the required declaration or assessment accurately. If a question is unclear, ask the insurer to explain it before purchasing.[1]
Keep your enquiry specific to the traveller and proposed trip. A policy’s marketing summary is useful for finding candidates, but it is not the whole contract. Save the policy wording and any individual endorsement that changes the standard terms.
Use a comparison note for each candidate
Give each policy its own page so you do not mix answers between insurers. Record the policy name, quote date and document version, then list the details still needing confirmation.
- Has the declared allergy been accepted, excluded or referred for further assessment?
- What excess, benefit limits and conditions apply to relevant medical claims?
- Does the cover include the complete itinerary, including stopovers and planned activities?
- What are the emergency-assistance contact details and claim-document requirements?
These are questions to resolve in the policy, not a promise that every insurer offers the same benefits. Do not mark an item complete simply because a comparison table says “medical included”.
Match the policy to the trip
Smartraveller advises checking countries, transit, duration and activities against the cover. A changed route or added activity may need another check. Read the requirements for notifying the insurer about changes rather than assuming the original quote still fits.[1]
Put the policy dates beside your departure and return dates. Note who is insured and how to access the documents while abroad. If buying as a group, make sure each person’s details have actually been supplied where required.
Keep a usable record after purchase
Save the certificate, policy wording, declarations and relevant written correspondence together. Create a short contact note with the policy number and assistance channel. This is an organisational summary, so link it back to the full documents rather than paraphrasing exclusions from memory.
When an answer remains ambiguous, ask the insurer to point to the clause or endorsement that applies. Choosing cover is a decision about the contract and your circumstances; this guide helps organise the questions and does not recommend a provider or determine whether a claim will be paid.
