Decide what you want to do there
Before comparing properties, decide whether you want to store a few packaged foods, prepare breakfast or cook complete meals. Those are different requirements. A room with a kettle may support one routine but not another. Write a short must-have list and a separate nice-to-have list so attractive photographs do not make the decision for you.
Ask about the actual facilities
Send the host a focused message with your dates and intended use. Ask for details that a generic booking filter cannot supply. For example: “We would like to prepare breakfast each morning. Is the kitchen private, and which appliances and cookware are included?”
- Is food storage private or shared, and is a refrigerator available?
- Which cooking appliances are in the booked room, rather than elsewhere in the building?
- Are utensils and cookware provided, and what cleaning supplies are available?
- Can you access these facilities immediately on arrival?
Keep the reply with the precise room type. Facilities in a larger apartment may not be included in the room you eventually reserve.
Include preparation in your arrival routine
Shared equipment needs attention as well as ingredients. FARE explains that allergen proteins can transfer through utensils and food-contact surfaces; cooking does not reliably remove this problem. Establish how you will clean and organise the preparation area and which equipment needs an alternative.[1]
A useful arrival note might say: inspect the equipment, organise a separate storage space, then unpack food. Do not treat a private kitchen as automatically free of previous food residue. If an essential item is missing, contact the host before improvising your planned meal.
Check the neighbourhood and the timetable
Map the route to a suitable shop and note opening hours on your arrival day. Include the journey with luggage, not just a straight-line distance on the map. For a late check-in, ask which facilities are accessible after reception closes.
If breakfast is included, ask who can answer ingredient and preparation questions. Keep the room booking and the food arrangement separate in your notes. Finally, check the cancellation deadline so you know how long you have to resolve unanswered essentials. A slightly less picturesque property can be a better practical base if it makes your intended routine easier.
Take it with you
Your takeaway checklist
- Define the meals you want to prepare.
- Confirm the exact room’s facilities in writing.
- Plan cleaning, storage and equipment checks.
- Save the nearest shop and its arrival-day hours.
