A FOOD TRADITION
Chinese Cuisine
Chinese cuisine in Singapore reflects several established southern Chinese migrant traditions, adapted through local ingredients, religious practices and generations of exchange. Rice, wheat noodles, soy products, seafood, pork, poultry, preserved vegetables and aromatic seasonings are central, with stir-frying, steaming, braising, roasting and soup-making especially prominent. The Singapore setting has given visibility to dishes such as bak kut teh, wonton noodles and roast meats, although each also belongs to wider Chinese and regional histories. Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hainanese and other lineages should be understood as overlapping strands rather than a single uniform style.
