A FOOD TRADITION

Chinese-Surinamese Cuisine

Chinese-Surinamese cuisine grew from Chinese migration, particularly Hakka communities, and from long interaction with Suriname's Javanese, Creole, Hindustani, and Dutch-speaking populations. It combines Chinese methods such as stir-frying, steaming, braising, marinating, and noodle preparation with local rice, greens, salted meats, seafood, and hot peppers. Soy sauce, five-spice, ginger, garlic, and preserved ingredients are recurring flavor elements. Examples include moksi meti, moksi-alesi, and Chinese-style noodles with local adaptations. The tradition is found in both household cooking and the broader Surinamese practice of combining techniques and dishes across communities.
