A FOOD TRADITION
Karaim Cuisine in Lithuania
Karaim cuisine in Lithuania is associated especially with the Karaim community of Trakai and reflects a Turkic culinary heritage adapted to Baltic surroundings. Wheat flour, meat, onions, dairy and seasonal vegetables are important, while baking, filled-pastry preparation, boiling and frying are characteristic techniques. The best-known examples are kibinai, crescent-shaped filled pastries traditionally associated with Karaim households, along with šaltanosiai dumplings and chebureki-style fried turnovers. This is a living cultural tradition with counterparts among Karaim communities elsewhere, so it should not be presented as exclusively Lithuanian in origin. Its place in Lithuania is nevertheless historically and culturally distinctive.
