A FOOD TRADITION

Kenyan South Asian Diaspora Cuisine

Kenyan South Asian diaspora cuisine developed through long-established Indian, Gujarati, Punjabi, and other South Asian communities in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and other commercial centers. It shares ingredients and techniques with cuisines of the Indian subcontinent while incorporating Kenyan produce, local markets, and coastal exchange. Wheat flour, rice, lentils, potatoes, vegetables, yogurt, ghee, and spice blends support breads, fried snacks, curries, and celebratory rice dishes. Recognizable examples include chapati, samosa, bhajia, and biryani, with regional family traditions differing in spice use and vegetarian or meat-based preparations. This is a Kenyan cultural foodway rather than a claim of exclusive origin.
