A FOOD TRADITION

Sherpa Cuisine

Sherpa cuisine is rooted in the high Himalayan communities of Solukhumbu and neighboring mountain regions, while also reflecting longstanding cultural links across the Nepal-Tibet borderlands. The food emphasizes potatoes, barley, buckwheat, wheat, yak or other dairy products, dried meat, noodles, and preserved vegetables, adapted to cold conditions and limited growing seasons. Soups, stews, griddle breads, and fermented or dried foods are characteristic techniques and formats. Recognizable examples include sha phaley, Sherpa-style meat-filled bread; thukpa; and potato- or cheese-based stews. The tradition should be presented as a shared Himalayan culture rather than an exclusive national invention.
