A FOOD TRADITION
Smålandic Cuisine
Smålandic cuisine is associated with the forested inland province of Småland in southern Sweden, where historically modest farm resources encouraged filling dishes, preservation, and careful use of pork, potatoes, grains, dairy, mushrooms, berries, and game. Lingonberries and other forest fruits commonly accompany savory foods, while baking and long cooking are important techniques. Examples include kroppkakor, potato dumplings filled with pork and onion; isterband, a lightly smoked coarse sausage particularly associated with the region; and ostkaka, a baked farmhouse-style curd dessert. The tradition overlaps with neighboring southern Swedish foodways but remains recognizable through its forest, farm, and preservation-oriented character.
