A FOOD TRADITION

Thai Peranakan Cuisine

Thai Peranakan Cuisine is associated particularly with Phuket and nearby Andaman communities shaped by exchanges among Hokkien Chinese, Malay, and Thai peoples. It favors aromatic pastes, pork and seafood where customary, soy and fermented seasonings, local herbs, noodles, and slow braising, often combining Chinese techniques with Southeast Asian spice profiles. Recognizable examples include Phuket-style moo hong, Hokkien mee, and lo ba, a platter of seasoned braised or fried items. Family and festival cooking are especially important, and terminology varies between communities. The tradition overlaps with Thai-Chinese Cuisine but has a distinctive Phuket-centered historical and cultural character.
