A FOOD TRADITION
Venda cuisine
Venda cuisine is centered in the northeastern Limpopo region among Venda-speaking communities and reflects longstanding links with neighboring Zimbabwe. Maize, groundnuts, beans, pumpkins, leafy greens, okra, fermented grains, and meat are central ingredients; mopane worms are also used in some local foodways. Preparation commonly involves pounding, boiling, drying, fermenting, and slow simmering. Examples include tshidzimba, a mixture of beans, maize, and groundnuts; vhuswa, a staple maize porridge; and delele, an okra-based relish served with porridge or other foods. Household practice varies, but the cuisine has a recognizable ingredient base and cultural context beyond generic South African cooking.
