A FOOD TRADITION

Vojvodina Cuisine

Vojvodina cuisine developed in the flat Pannonian north, where Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Rusyn, Croatian, and German communities have shaped a shared culinary landscape. It commonly uses paprika, onions, pork, freshwater fish, seasonal vegetables, noodles, wheat flour, and preserved fruits. Characteristic techniques include slow stewing, paprika-based frying, baking in large family ovens, pickling, and making filled or layered pastries. Recognizable examples include fish paprikash, paprika chicken, and poppy-seed or walnut strudel. The tradition is especially associated with household cooking and village festivities, while particular dishes and terminology vary considerably among Vojvodina’s constituent communities.
