About Choreg

Victoria shares her grandmother's Armenian choreg, a mildly sweet bread associated with Easter and sometimes Christmas. Eggs, butter and milk enrich the dough, while mahleb gives the bread its distinctive aroma.

The yeast dough rises before it is loosely braided. A wash of whole egg, egg yolk and sugar coats the shaped bread, and sesame seeds finish the surface before baking.

The braids bake golden and cool completely before serving. Victoria suggests Armenian string cheese alongside the bread, pairing the mildly sweet crumb with a savoury accompaniment.
