Oshifima

Also known as: Kwanyama Millet Porridge

Firm pearl-millet porridge, with a cooked dried-leaf vegetable sauce offered alongside.

About Oshifima

Oshifimá is the thick millet porridge described by Kirsti Malua in Riikka Halme-Berneking’s account of Kwanyama food. Its firm, cohesive texture supports small portions gathered by hand.

Pearl-millet meal and water form the porridge itself. The offered evandá side has wild leafy greens, tomato, onion, oil and salt, giving the plain cereal a strong vegetable contrast.

The porridge is presented on a serving plate with the vegetable sauce beside it. This pairing belongs to the Kwanyama food traditions documented in Namibia and Angola.
