Vetkoek

Also known as: Amagwinya

Yeasted fried wheat breads with soft centres, offered with curried beef mince and fresh vegetables.

About Vetkoek

Vetkoek are South African fried yeast breads with golden exteriors and soft, fluffy centres. Annelize’s family rendition uses strong bread flour and a little sugar, with curried beef mince offered as a traditional filling.

The bread has a lightly sweet cereal flavour beneath its fried crust. The mince carries onion, tomato paste and curry seasoning, with mixed vegetables in its sauce.

The rounded breads are substantial enough to split and fill. Sliced onion, tomato and lettuce accompany the optional mince, giving the rich bread and meat a fresh contrast.
