A FOOD TRADITION

Palembang Cuisine

Palembang cuisine is the culinary tradition of the Musi River region in South Sumatra and the historic Palembang Malay world. River fish, especially freshwater species, rice, sago, coconut, tamarind, palm sugar, and aromatic spices are central. Cooking includes grinding spice pastes, steaming or poaching fish mixtures, simmering sour broths, and preparing richly spiced coconut-based dishes. Representative examples include pempek, pindang patin, and tekwan. Its historical connections to Malay, Chinese, and maritime trade traditions do not make it interchangeable with generic Indonesian or Malay cuisine; Palembang has a recognizable repertoire and a strong fish-centered identity.
