Xalwo

Glossy Somali starch-and-sugar halwa scented with cardamom and nutmeg.

About Xalwo

Xalwo is Somali halwa, a festive sweet associated with weddings, Eid and Mawlid. Leila and Abdullahi's family recipe combines cornstarch, two sugars, butter and canola oil.

Cardamom and nutmeg give the sweet a pronounced spice aroma. White and light brown sugars provide sweetness, while orange and yellow food colouring create its bright colour.

The halwa forms a glossy, cohesive mass, with excess oil removed from the finished confection. It is cooled before serving and is also enjoyed with Somali afternoon tea.
